Pre-service Program at the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy

The Pre-Service Program provides Basic Law Enforcement Training to individuals who are interested in a law enforcement career, but are not employed by a law enforcement agency. The Basic Law Enforcement Training Course is a 408 hour course that runs Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for 10 consecutive weeks. The Pre-Service Program allows individuals, not employed with an agency, to attend the Academy at their own expense. As an applicant there are several costs you will incur during the application process that are non-refundable.

The first step for those interested in attending NCGLEA as a Pre-Service student is attendance at a Pre-Service informational meeting.  Pre-Service informational meetings are held quarterly, in January, April, July, and October, at the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy campus located at 5000 Austell-Powder Springs Road, Suite 151 – Austell, GA 30106 – 770-499-5080.  To register for the next scheduled meeting, click here.  After registering, you must complete a background questionnaire which you will be required to have with you at the meeting; you will not be permitted to attend without it. (Click here to download the background questionaire).  The questionnaire is intended as a tool to help you assess whether or not you can successfully complete the required back ground investigation.  Please note, however, that this questionnaire will be made part of your application if you choose to apply.

Applications will be made available at the conclusion of the informational meeting for those who wish to be considered for the program.  There is a $150.00 application fee payable by cash or money order only. If you are accepted into the academy, you will be reimbursed the $150.00 application fee contingent upon payment in full of the tuition fee and your attendance on the first day of the course.  


ALL PRE-SERVICE STUDENTS STARTING THE BASIC MANDATE CLASS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FULL TUITION AMOUNT OF $3,093.00. THIS IS IN ADDITION TO APPROXIMATELY $925 IN BACKGROUND FEES.  

 

Listed below are the basic qualifications required to be accepted into the Pre-service Program at the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy:

• Natural born or naturalized citizen of the Unites States of America;
• At least 21 years of age;
• Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED);
• Pass the College Entrance Test (Compass, Asset, etc.) (fee);
• Meet all other P.O.S.T. requirements for certification as a Georgia peace officer;
• Successfully complete a psychological assessment by a NCGLEA appointed agency (fee);
• Successfully complete a polygraph examination by a NCGLEA appointed agency (fee);
• Successfully complete background investigation by a NCGLEA appointed agency (fee);
• Successfully complete a criminal history and driver’s history review by the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office (fee);
• Successfully pass the POST Application Process (fee);
• Must provide proof of medical insurance and possess a valid GA driver’s license prior to the first day of class.

NO applicant for the Pre-Service Program will be accepted if that applicant:

  • Is currently employed by a law enforcement agency;
  • Has previously been employed by a law enforcement agency and was dismissed for cause, terminated, or resigned in lieu of termination or during the course of an Internal Affairs investigation;
  • Has previously failed or withdrawn from the Basic Law Enforcement Training Course at any POST certified academy within FIVE YEARS of their Pre-Service application date (Note: students who failed or withdrew while attending NCGLEA as a Pre-Service student may be allowed to return to complete their training within twelve (12) months of the date of their failure or withdrawal from the NCGLEA Pre-Service program).

If accepted into the Pre-service Program, you will be enrolled in a 408 hour Basic Law Enforcement Training Course. While attending this course you will be required to complete the following:

• The Emergency Vehicle Operations Course
• Defensive Tactics Course
• Firearms Training Course (for the Firearms portion of the course you may bring your personal 9mm, .40 cal, or .45 cal firearm and it must be pre-approved by the academy prior to use on the range. If you do not have your own, the academy will supply you with one. NO FIREARMS ARE ALLOWED AT THE ACADEMY UNTIL THE DAY OF FIREARMS TRAINING. Ammunition will be supplied by the academy to all students; no live ammunition is to be brought to the academy at any time.)
• Numerous academic exams and performance evaluations pertaining to the GA POST Basic Law Enforcement Training Course curriculum.

If you are accepted into the Academy’s Basic Training Course, your tuition will be due, in full on the first day of class. The total tuition fee is $3,093.00 and is non-refundable for any reason should you not complete the Pre-service program.

As previously noted, There are various fees associated with the Pre-service program application process.  All fees pertaining to the application process are non-refundable if for any reason you should not be accepted into the Pre-service Program at North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy. Please note that to become fully certified after completing the Pre-service Program, you must be hired by a Georgia law enforcement agency within three (3) years of the date of your initial Pre-service application.
